Description Sorghum Gadam is a popular hybrid variety of sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) widely grown for its high
yield, drought resistance, and adaptability to diverse climatic conditions.
Developed by SeedCo, Sorghum Gadam is especially well-suited for regions in Africa where rainfall is
unpredictable, and the soil may be less fertile.
It is an excellent option for both food and feed production, with a growing popularity among farmers
in dryland farming areas.
Drought Tolerance: One of the standout features of Sorghum Gadam is its exceptional drought tolerance.
It is ideal for dryland farming and areas that experience water stress, as it can still thrive even
with limited rainfall.
Early Maturity: Sorghum Gadam has an early maturity rate, typically maturing in about 90 to 110 days.
This allows farmers to harvest sooner, making it a reliable crop for regions with short growing
seasons or unreliable rainfall.
Disease and Pest Resistance: Sorghum Gadam has inherent resistance to common sorghum diseases and pests, such as head smut and
maize weevil, which makes it a more resilient option for farmers and reduces the need for extensive
pesticide use.
Dual-purpose Crop: Sorghum Gadam is used for both grain production and fodder.
Its seeds are suitable for human consumption (often ground into flour) and livestock feed, adding
flexibility for farmers.
.

Land Preparation: Clear the land: Remove weeds, debris, and rocks from the field to make way for planting. Plowing: Plow the soil to a depth of 15-20 cm to break up any compacted layers. Harrowing: Harrow the soil to smooth out the surface and prepare an even seedbed for planting. Planting Method: Spacing: Space the sorghum plants 20 to 30 cm apart within rows, with a row spacing of about 75 to 90 cm. Seed Rate: The recommended seed rate is about 8 to 12 kg per acre for optimal crop establishment. Planting Depth: Plant the seeds at a depth of around 4 to 5 cm to ensure proper germination and seed-to-soil contact. Fertilization: Basal Fertilizer: Apply NPK (23:23:23) or another balanced fertilizer at a rate of 50 to 70 kg per acre at planting to promote strong early growth. Top Dressing: After about 4 to 6 weeks, apply CAN (Calcium Ammonium Nitrate) or similar nitrogen-based fertilizer at a rate of 30 to 50 kg per acre to encourage vegetative growth. Irrigation: While Sorghum Gadam is drought-resistant, supplementary irrigation during the growing season, particularly during flowering and grain filling stages, can further boost yields.
